About the RMBC of Victoria,
and Our Racing.
Our Club is building in numbers every month, more
new members turn up with one boat or a car full, it just keeps
getting bigger. We currently have 20 members that meet every month.
We run two types of races - Oval Racing and Straight Line speed
events. The Racing model Boat Club of Victoria has some of
Australia’s best competitors in Oval racing and the SAW
(Straightaway or Straight line speed event). To host a SAW event
there is a lot of work involved, the timing trap needs to be setup
and tested, the water needs to be checked for any floating debris
to avoid damage not only to the boats, but also to avoid a boat
leaving the water at 160km/h and landing in the crowd of onlookers.
It is the same with Oval racing every thing must be checked
thoroughly, and rechecked throughout the events.
Some boats are only capable of 80-90km/h but some
upwards of 160km/h. A lot has to do with motor size, hull type and
so on. For a SAW event the lake has to be big enough for the run up
and wide enough to turn at high speeds. Caribbean Gardens is ranked
one of the best places for both types of events and competitors
come from all over Australia to race in the SAW. Each type of event
has its good and bad points, it takes a brilliant racer to be able
to accomplish well in both of these events.
Oval racing needs a good mix of both speed and
handling to make it with the best of them. Being able to get from a
slow speed to full throttle in a matter of seconds, whilst avoiding
boats that may flip over or dive under, and four more trying to
exchange paint with you, good acceleration and handling can
certainly help. Check out our Club racing dates, come and have a
look, there is always someone to talk to or even get some advice on
what type of boat to start with. This is a fun hobby, you can take
it as it comes or take it very seriously. Remember it’s not always
the fastest boats that win.
With all the different classes to run in there is
always a boat class for everyone, some clubs have many members in a
few classes, some many classes with select members. Weather you
like to run Nitro engines or Petrol engines there will be a class
for you and your boat. All the boat classes are made up with the
hull type and engine type. Like with A Mono the A stands for the
engine size which is 3.5cc or .21cu and Mono is a hull that has one
continuous surface that is in contact with the water, and B Mono it
has a 7.5cc or .45cu engine and the same Mono hull design, C mono
is for an engine size of 11cc or .67cu and last but not least, X
Mono has a Engine size of 11.1 cc up to 30cc. Then we have the
petrol engines the first (and most inexpensive) class is up to 25cc
and then we have the open petrol up to 35cc.

original full size boat coloring, configuration and detail, also a
motor restriction of 11cc. Further guide lines to follow in this
category are available from the AMPBA.
No matter which class or style of boat you may choose, they are
all very rewarding to build and race.
